The Gryps Conflict had ended with the fall of the Titans, but both the Earth Federation and the AEUG had been weakened by the horrific losses. Before the Federation had a chance to recover, Zeon remnants based on the asteroid Axis since the end of the First Zeon War decided to take advantage of the aftermath and invade the Earth Sphere.
On March 3, UC 0088, 11 days after the final battle of the Gryps Conflict, the Axis Zeon, now calling itself Neo Zeon, declared the Principality of Zeon had been restored. The Second Zeon War, as this resulting conflict would be called, was just the first of a series of conflicts involving various incarnations of the Neo Zeon movement.
