The Civil War ended with the Confederacy triumphant and the Union forced to recognize its status as an independent nation. However, for the Union, the Civil War did not end; instead, what followed was a long and bitter conflict between North and South.

Twenty years after the South seceded, war would break out once again as the Union declared war on the Confederacy over its purchase of new territories from Mexico. Once again, the South, aided by Britain and France, triumphed over the North.
